relaxing in social situations

Excitement for the holidays can be clouded by the fear or anxiety of upcoming social interactions. People who need to recharge after social settings may especially struggle this busy time of year.

The social intensity of holiday parties, events, and even holiday shopping can drain even the most extroverted people.

Once you’re on your own team you can start implementing these strategies to cope!

#3 Challenge Your Thoughts

Now that you have accepted your thoughts and feelings, you can start to challenge the anxious thoughts that are floating in your head.

Ask yourself why you’re having these thoughts. Did anyone say anything to you to make you think this way or are your insecurities taking over?

These conversations can be hard, but are necessary to relax in social situations.

Try to reframe your negative thoughts into a positive mindset.

I don’t know anyone in here, I’m so awkward!

Can be reframed as:

I wonder what kind of friends I will make tonight!

#4 Focus on the Environment Around You

It’s time to get out of your own head!

Start by paying attention to what people are saying to you and really observing the environment you’re in.

When you’re busy in conversation and using your senses to explore the social setting, your anxious thoughts will settle!

#5 Practice Deep Breathing Exercises

Deep breathing is something we hear a lot, but not all of us actually practice it.

Taking deep breaths and focusing on your breathing can help settle your nervous system and help you relax in social situations.

You’ll want to focus on your breath by counting to 4, 5, 6, and then 7 as you inhale and exhale. Getting your breaths deeper and deeper until you feel a release of tension in your body!

You can always try it out right now!

#6 Take Breaks

It’s okay to take breaks from large crowds or even step outside!

Becoming overwhelmed in a social situation doesn’t mean you have to leave and go home.

First, try to take a break and ease yourself back into the social setting. Be gentle with yourself! A quick break here and there to practice your breathing exercises may be all you need!

And always remember, you can leave if you need to!
